The third of our Asmodee Board Game Club Blogger games is Unlock Escape Adventures. My kids love to watch people do escape rooms on Youtube and have asked me many times if they can do one. This game is based on the idea of an escape room – all from the safety of your own front room!
There are 3 different adventures to play:
- The Formula, enter a secret laboratory to recover a mysterious serum that has been developed by a scientist…
- Squeek & Sausage, thwart the plans of the despicable Professor Noside!
- The Island of Doctor Goorse, visit the island of an eccentric antique collector billionaire and overcome its traps!
Unboxing really couldn’t be any easier, the only things in the box are 3 sets of cards and an instruction leaflet.
Together wiith the cards there is an app to download to accompany the game. This is available on the App Store and Play store.
The app is free and simple to follow, you choose which one of the 3 adventures that accompanies the card set you’ve picked.
In our case we chose the Squeek & Sausage adventure.
The app starts with 59:00 minutes on the clock, I naively thought it sounded ages and would be simple. I was wrong, very wrong.
The app has a tutorial included to make this easier although there are also tutorial cards, choose whichever suits you best.
To start the game, place the start card in the middle of the table and the rest of the cards face down in a pile – don’t look at them first. you’ll only ruin it for yourself! The first room of the game is on the back of the start card. If you see a number on any of the cards you need to find the corresponding one in the pile. Each of the cards could have more than one hidden number so look carefully!!
The cards have different purposes:
- Red or Blue Stripe: Objects and can be combined
- Green stripe: Machines: Use the machine button on the app and enter the number in the corner of the card
- Yellow stripe: Codes – always 4 digits
- Grey stripe: Others
Some of the cards can be combined, you can see they have jigsaw puzzle pieces in the corner a red and blue can be combined, add up the number and look for that number card in the pile. Cards that have a number with a line through it can be discarded as they are no longer needed.
Watch out for the penalty cards, these mean you lose time, you have to abide by them – no cheating! If you get really stuck you can use the hint button. Luckily for us the game doesn’t end if you don’t finish within the hour, it carries on until you’ve actually finished.
I won’t ruin the games by telling you any of the story but I have to say this is one of the best games I’ve played in ages. We did not do it in the hour but we had great fun trying! Although the game is 10+ I played it with my 10 & 7 year olds and gave my 7 year old the simple task of looking for numbers hidden on the cards, she loved being involved and feeling like she had an important job.
- Age 10+
- 2-6 players
- 60 minutes + play time
